Qualifications:

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

UTILITY ARBORIST

  • Perform tree maintenance and tree removal, cabling, and bracing, using aerial device and manual climbing using approved climbing and safety equipment and techniques, in proximity to energized conductors or electrical apparatus;
  • Drive/operate/inspect and ensure proper maintenance of various vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to: bucket trucks, chipper, tractor/loader, backhoe, stump grinder, sprayer, fertilizers, chain saw, motorized pole saw and other associated equipment and hand tools;
  • Liaise with public/clients to address work site issues;
  • Identify hazards/potential hazards and protect self and others to work in a safe environment, including the proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment;
  • Comply with all health, safety, and regulatory requirements and vegetation management standards;
  • Perform all necessary duties for emergency response in accordance with all safety requirements, laws and regulations and applicable labour agreements;
  • May be required to provide work direction and training to other staff and carry out duties that meet health and safety standards in a safe and responsible manner.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES

UTILITY ARBORIST

  • Ability to work in rugged terrain and inclement weather;
  • Ability to drive and operate a 4x4 vehicle;
  • Ability to perform aerial rescue;
  • Ability to perform work completely, correctly, and in a professional manner;
  • Possess strong verbal communication skills and present ideas in formal and informal situations, such as tailboard safety talks;
  • Demonstrate reliability and dependability to perform work to meet expectations and standards.

EXPERIENCE AND KEY QUALIFICATIONS

UTILITY ARBORIST

  • Experience in all types of arboricultural work including pruning, removal, cabling, bracing, stumping, planting, and fertilizing;
  • Experience in the care and safe operation of chain saws, motorized pole saws, brush chippers, bucket trucks, stump grinders, and associated equipment and hand tools;
  • Experience climbing trees and using approved equipment and safety procedures when working at various heights, including work in the vicinity of energized conductors;
  • Familiarity and understanding of applicable legislation and industry standards, including, but not limited to, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (and associated regulations), the Highway Traffic Act, and the Arborist Safe Work Practices Guide, Electrical Safety Rule Book.

 

Education/Assets/Other:

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

UTILITY ARBORIST

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma;
  • Utility Arborist Certificate of Qualification 444B from the Ontario College of Trades; or;
  • ISA Certification for Arborist Utility Specialist;
  • Possess a valid driver’s license (DZ preferred);
  • Landscape Pesticide Applicators License;
  • Training in electrical safety awareness.
