This is a full-time position at a non-profit garden that reports to the Director of Horticulture, and Horticulturist. Responsible for performing activities related to the care and maintenance of the gardens, landscape, and grounds.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Performs all needed horticultural activities, including those directed by supervisors. Activities include planting, pruning, fertilizing, watering, weeding, mulching, and pesticide applications, pest control, garden cleanup, and custodial tasks.
- Operates and maintains hand tools, power tools (chain saw, blower, lawnmower, string trimmer), electric carts, tractors, and other equipment.
- Assist with the maintenance and installation of irrigation systems when needed.
- Assist with the care and maintenance of plants in the nursery when needed. Assist in the setup and take down of tables, chairs, and other equipment for classes, workshops, meetings, and events.
- Assist with other SDBG activities and tasks when needed.
Skills and Requirements:
Must have a general knowledge of plants and their culture. College level course work in horticulture and allied fields is recommended. Must be a team player and work well with other staff and volunteers. Must be courteous and helpful to all garden visitors. Must be in good physical condition and have the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs. a distance of 25 feet often. Must have a valid driver's license. Must be available to work some weekend and evening shifts.
Special Note:
This position is an entry-level gardener position. Persons in this position are expected to continually increase their knowledge of the Garden's collections, horticultural and maintenance procedures, and the field of ornamental horticulture.
Compensation
Compensation: $10-$12
