Job Description:
• Plan and direct maintenance and control operation of Bylands container fields
• Organize and direct planting and establish the environmental conditions required to grow trees, shrubs, flowers and plants and design planting and care schedules accordingly
• Supervise nursery and greenhouse workers and participate with staff in planting, transplanting, feeding and spraying stock
• Establish work schedules and procedures
• Resolve work related problems, identifying and control of insect, disease and weed problems
• Requisition or order materials, equipment and supplies.
• Work closely with the Shipping Coordinator, including helping with any logistical and supply chain needs of the organization
• Repair and maintain equipment. Maintain all yards, buildings and equipment in a clean, safe and good working order that reflects Bylands Nurseries in a professional manner to the team and public
• Hire, supervise and schedule staff. Supervise, direct and train employees in day-to-day activities of the seasonal working staff (SAWP Program) as well as set work schedules, timesheets, coaching and orientation.  This requires speaking fluent Spanish and English
• Plan and estimate labour and materials. Implement the crop cycles of the production plan to ensure continual production of sufficient plan material to meet anticipated future sales demand
• Maintain work records and logs

Work conditions and physical capabilities:

- Bending, crouching kneeling
- Work in a wide range of weather conditions (hot, cold, wet, windy)

Requirements:

Education: Completion of high school is required and/or A college diploma, specialized courses and/or industry related training and/or certification in horticulture is required.

Experience:  At least two years of experience as a horticulture worker is required. If candidate does not have the experience required, then a post-secondary certificate is required.
- Supervisory experience in the field of horticulture is required
- Pesticide applicator’s certificate is an asset

Language requirement: Worker must be fluent in English and Spanish. We have a large workforce of Spanish speaking workers and it is important that the supervisor be able to communicate to the workers in Spanish to ensure not only work instructions but safe work procedures.

Important information:

Workday begins at 7 AM and end at 4 PM, from Tuesday to Saturday. 1 or 2 days off are set on a rotational basis. During peak season, work is until 5 PM and 6 days a week. (peak season lasts 6-8 weeks).

Compensation

Salary: $20.60 to $21.60 hourly, 45.00 to 50.00 Hours per week
